"Pete’s songwriting and composition is tight and focused, with a solid pop sensibility. Completely instrumental, Astor’s playing often reminds me of Neal Schon’s solo work when he lays solid and clear melody lines over the rhythm and textures, replacing the need or urge for a vocalist.
Hours in Just Minutes” is a mid-disc highlight, building on intricate layers that weave back and forth as if in chase of an elusive prize. “Jimbo’s Bayou Reverie” follows, continuing down the acoustic path Astor has been following, but adding a little southern gothic tone to the proceedings.
As with any acoustic instrumental album like this, Dawn Creeps Up may draw comparisons to the glut of instrumental new age music that you hear in those “tree-hugger nature stores” at the mall.
But if you listen deeper, Astor’s originality makes this far more than just background music. His playing style and pop-wise writing even invoke a little bit of Steven Stills at times on tracks like “One Time Only” and “Sleeping in the Grass”.
Dawn Creeps Up is a surprisingly engaging debut release that proves to be far more pop-friendly than many “new-agey” acoustic releases of this type. His playing will likely appeal more to the pop music fans than jazz listeners."
